SVNH in the Community

Meals on Wheels

Saint Vincent's assists in providing meals to seniors in the community through participation in the local Meals on Wheels program. If you or someone you know would like more information on this program, please call 429-4299.

Chebucto Links

Chebucto Links is a community outreach Chebucto Links Bannerassociation that endeavours to enable older persons to live independently and safely while maintaining their quality of life within their community. Saint Vincent's works in partnership Chebucto Links, providing meeting space and photocopying resources. Residents of Saint Vincent's enjoy activities sponsored by Chebucto Links including the weekly "Lunch Bunch" held at a nearby neighbourhood church.

Local Schools and Universities

Dalhousie University
12 first year Pharmacy Students volunteer at Saint Vincent's each year between from September and April. They work in Pastoral Care, Physiotherapy and facilitate morning coffee programs on several units. They also facilitate “Mind  Matters” on Thursday mornings.

In addition, students from Nursing, Recreation, Physiotherapy, and Health Administration programs are regular volunteer with both residents or within administration.

Nova Scotia Community College
We are proud to accept students of the Recreation program completing their field placements as well as students from Public Relations at the Nova Scotia Community College.

High Schools
This past year we had students from Grade 10 and 11 at Citadel High who are new Canadians. Three students from the Sacred Heart Grade 11 class volunteers each Wednesday between September and May. We also often have other junior and senior high students as part of course requirements or scholarship applications.

Speakers Bureau

Saint Vincent’s has many talented individuals on staff who have volunteered to speak on a variety of topics of interest to the general and seniors’ populations.  If you are looking for a speaker for a meeting or special event, members of our Speaker’s Bureau would be more than happy to assist you.

Saint Vincent’s Speaker’s Bureau members have expertise in the following subjects:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise and staying active
  • Arthritis
  • Spiritual care for individuals with Dementia
  • Ethics in long term care
  • Transition into a long term care facility
  • Changes in health care system
  • Elder abuse
  • Alzheimer’s & dementia
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Advanced Care Directives/Living Will
